Tricky decision: Many Mamis regret the child's first name

For freshly baked parents it is one of the most difficult first challenges: How should the child be called?

Once the sex of the baby is established, the search for a suitable first name usually starts. Parents discuss and weigh usually months before the child is born and look for the perfect first name, which is then frequently changed in the delivery room but still at short notice.
In 2016, Marie, Elias, Sophie or Alexander were at the forefront of the most popular baby names. But sometimes doubts arise whether it was really the right decision in the end.

Heavy name finding: Ben or Luca?

A survey in the UK Parents Forum 'Mumsnet' has now revealed that many are dissatisfied with the choice of the first name for their baby . 1,362 mothers were asked whether they would give their children the same name again. The result: One in five mother admitted she was regretting her name choice.

What are the reasons for dissatisfaction?

The majority of the mothers surveyed, 25 percent say they regret the name selection, because the name seems too common to them today. Others said that they were influenced by others when they were named.

245 of the mothers, that is, eleven percent said that they "always knew it was the wrong choice". Three percent knew it as soon as the child was born, and eight percent recognized a few days after birth that the first name was not the right choice. 32 per cent in the first six weeks and 23 per cent regretted the nomination by entering the kindergarten or the school. However, only six percent of mothers have been able to change their children's first names later, even though every third has already thought about it.

One of the first great challenges for parents

The choice of the first name is one of the first great choices awaiting fresh-baked parents. The many weighing and researching is a good exercise for the young parents, because there are still so many important decisions on them and their child. In the end, most children grow into their names, so to speak, and all those who are still dissatisfied may be able to avoid a second name or a nickname. In extreme cases, however, an official name change may also be requested.
